Rookie Austin Cindric has been crowned the 2022 Daytona 500 champion after a thrilling season opener race. Just a few years ago, Cindric was a relative newcomer to NASCAR. He has become a very competent road racer but spent a lot of time finding a way to run fast on the oval. Then it clicked - and now he's written his name in Daytona 500 history.
With the help of the draft from Penske teammate Ryan Blaney, Austin Cindric beat three different opponents (Brad Keselowski, Bubba Wallace, and Ryan Blaney) in the final round of the Daytona 500 to claim his first win in the NASCAR Cup Series.
Currently, Cindric is the 9th driver to win his first Career Cup at the Daytona 500 and second in a row. Cindric now joins the team, including Tiny Lund (1963), Mario Andretti (1967), Pete Hamilton (1970), Derrike Cope (1990), Sterling Marlin (1994), Michael Waltrip (2001), Trevor Bayne (2011), and Michael McDowell (2021).
